Perplexity's push to grow the user base of Comet, its AI-native web browser, past the early-adopter stage and into mainstream daily-driver territory reflects a strategic conviction that has become widely shared across the AI-search category: whoever controls the browser controls the default surface through which users experience AI-assisted search, shopping and task completion, and that surface-level control is more durable than any individual feature advantage in the underlying model. Perplexity's subscription-plus-advertising hybrid, OpenAI's tie-in to ChatGPT Plus subscriptions, and Google's ad-revenue-preserving approach through Chrome each represent different bets on how an AI browser eventually generates sustainable revenue once venture subsidy for compute-intensive agentic browsing tapers off, and none has yet demonstrated unit economics that clearly work at scale. For Indian users, who represent one of the largest Chrome user bases globally and have historically been quick adopters of new mobile-first browsing behaviours, the agentic-browser competition is being watched closely by e-commerce and digital-payments companies concerned about what happens to their carefully built checkout funnels if an AI agent increasingly completes transactions on a user's behalf without ever rendering the merchant's actual page.
