GitHub's continued expansion of Copilot's autonomous agent mode - letting developers assign multi-step coding tasks that the agent completes across an entire repository with minimal supervision, directly inside the GitHub interface rather than requiring a separate specialised editor - represents Microsoft's most direct competitive response yet to the threat that Cursor, Devin and other standalone agentic-coding products pose to GitHub's historical position as developers' default code-hosting and collaboration platform. For Indian enterprises and IT-services companies already standardised on GitHub for source control, Copilot's expanding agent capability has represented a lower-friction adoption path relative to introducing an entirely new standalone agentic-coding tool, and several large Indian IT-services firms have reportedly begun standardising their agentic-coding procurement around GitHub Copilot specifically because it requires no additional platform migration.
